DC New 52 #1

Free Comic Book Day Comics

Cover of The New 52 #1 (Free Comic Book Day)

New 52 #1 features a story which about the origin of the curse of Pandora (Pandora was seen during the last part of Justice League #6). Together with two other male convicted of a crime by the Wizards that practices and guards magic a long time ago, the three were labeled as “The Trinity of Sin”. The first man was sentenced to walk the earth as a stranger to man, witness of all that is greed. The second man was sentenced to forget his name. As for Pandora, she was sentenced to an eternity of loneliness.

Present day, or it seemed, Silas Stone and his group picked up a signal from an alternated Universe with Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman and the rest of their heroes fighting the Darkesied’s soldiers. (Earth-2 #1).

We also see Alan Scott saying his Green Lantern Oath “I shed –light upon– –darkness!” and also Jay Garrick in his Earth-2 Flash uniform.

Pandora fights off Steve Trevor and A.R.G.U.S. army in retrieval of her box and the thing it contained.

The best part of it is the clash between the Justice League against some other super-enhanced beings (one of which is a new Green Lantern fighting against Batman. It was set in the near future with probably the main story to come up next year known as ‘TRINITY WAR”.

Justice League #9 (The New 52)

Ninth Issue of Justice League (The New 52)

Cover of Justice League #9 (The New 52)

The adventure of the Justice Leage continues as a new threat rises in to take them.

The issue begins with a very sick David Graves. It appears that this David (together with his family)  was among the fortunate ones that was saved by the Justice League 5 years ago against Darkseid’s takeover of the planet (read Justice League #6). David even managed to publish a book in honor of the Justice League but what happened to him from then to his state now will be revealed (in my opinion) in the coming issues.

Also, we see a dysfunctional Steve Trevor who seemed stressed about the things that are happening in his life. His failed relationship (as what it seemed to others) to Wonder Woman is the target topic of the local media.

Also this issue show glimpse of the past of our heroes. Batman, Superman, Cyborg, Flash, and Green Lantern had some flashbacks featuring sad moments in their lives.

This issue goes differently with no seemed connection to its previous issue (Justice League # 8 wherein we see Green Arrow tries to become a member of the team and incident during the 5-year gap between the group’s origin to its current is revealed with the Martian Manhunter also unsuccessfully made it to the team. Last issue had its funny moments as opposed to this one that had nothing at all.

Ending this issue, David Gates takes in Steve Trevor torturing him on how he (David) can destroy the Justice League. Steve agrees to give in to David’s demands as David threatens to put Steve’s sister and her family to death.

ALPHA WAR CONTINUES… Green Lantern Corps #9 (The New 52)

Ninth Issue of Green Lantern Corps (The New 52)

Cover of Green Lantern Corps #9 (The New 52)

John Stewart is being arrested by the Alpha Lanterns for his murder of fellow Green Lantern Kirrt during their time as prisoners at the hand of the Keepers (Green Lantern Corps # 6). John pleads guilty, surrenders peacefully despite Guy Gardner’s defense on his part and with the Corps having different opinions about the event that they had just witnessed.

What I like about this issue is how Guy Gardner tried to defend John Stewart against the Alpha Lanterns even though he was not aware about what really happened before. And even though he had seen how John killed Kirrt (through recordings of their power rings) he still stand by John’s side and believed that John had done nothing wrong and probably a good reason for doing such.

The Green Lantern Corps, faced again with an issue that reflects them as a group, is divided about John’s actions. It is really hard to find out that someone from them had kill another one of their own. Some let their emotions get the best of them accusing John instantly by the facts that had been presented to them while others wanted to know deeper into the incident as to how that event transpired.

The supposed to be authority for them, their founder, the Guardians of the Universe, are useless leaving everything on the hands of the Alpha Lanterns. They had all the power to know what is true, to pass the rightful decision about John’s actions, and yet they let their Corps do things on their own. Their plans to destroy their own Corps are slowly taking place by letting disorder among their men.

This book had been really John and Guy’s book with most of the stories revolving around them with the Corps in the background. In this issue we see John stay strong with the accusation faced against him while Guy Gardner keeps his supports high to his friend. It seemed that John always had to make the hard decisions in order for the Corps and had to face the consequences for doing what is right that seemed to be wrong for others.

Overall it is an average/great issue with deals with politics, human nature, friendship, and upholding values.

DROWNING IN THE MADNESS OF BLACK HAND! (Green Lantern #9 The New 52)

Ninth Issue of Green Lantern (The New 52)

Cover of Green Lantern #9 (The New 52)

Green Lantern #9 reveals a lot about the Indigo Tribe: its creation, its founders, and its future plans. And most of all, this issue revealed what “Nok” really means.

Sinestro was finally converted as an Indigo Tribesmen. During his transformation,  a glimpse about his past showed how Sinestro lost his wife, Arin Sur, the sister of Abin Sur.

Hal, in his plan to bring Sinestro out of the Indigo Tribe’s home planet, led him to meet Natromo, who, together with Abin Sur was responisble for the creation of the Indigo Tribe.

As revealed by Natromo to Hal, members of the Indigo Tribe were former criminals and evil-doers brought in by Abin Sur to be change them to feel compassion. Aside from that, the Indigo Tribesmen were also created for another purpose, to serve as Abin Sur’s army in his fight to what an evil he calls as the “Guardians of the Universe”.

The issue promises a great story as to how the evil referred to by Abin Sur as the Guardians of the Universe will be stopped. This could be a great cross-over between the Green Lantern titles as the Guardians are connected to three of its on-going titles (Green Lantern, Green Lantern Corps, and Green Lantern New Guardians).

But before a great event like that (hopefully) happens, Hal together with Sinestro must find themselves a way out against the Indigo Tribesmen who had then freed from their link from emotion of compassion and probably back to their evil state of minds as seen at the end of this issue. One of which is Hal’s notable enemy, Black Hand. Munk is also seen as one of the Tribesmen free from compassion as his character left Kyle and the rest of the group to join the tribe. (New Guardians #8).

Starstorm , a character that was last seen with Sinestro before (Green Lantern #6), was killed by the Guardians after the latter was unable to provide the information the Guardians needed. This act clearly displays the change in character that the Guardians had displaying latley during Geoff Johns run in the Green Lantern book. Geoff brought in the dark side of the Guardians contrary to their characters before as calm and peace driven entities.

The cover art seemed misleading as it displays Black Hand whilst the story itself mostly dwell on the origin of the tribe with Black Hand only appearing in the end with no such significance and relevance to the entire issue.

By the way, Nok means “compassion be with you”. It is also is the name of the Indigo Tribe’s home planet

The Epic Begins! Earth-2 #1 (The New 52)

First Issue of Earth-2 (The New 52)

Cover of Earth-2 #1 (The New 52)

Finally! DC released Earht 2 #1 as part of the second wave from their DCnU titles. The statement in the cover conveys what the book has to offer, “A different worl! A different destiny!”

Long time comic readers, especially that of DC, knows about the existence of Earth-2 prior the big crisis (Crisis on Infinite Earths) which is the homeworld of the the Justice Society of America before their world, as well as with others from other Earth, merged with what was known as Earth-1 and everyone co-existed in one Earth.

Now, with the retcons that happened to most of DC’s characters, Earth-2 #1 offers a new beginning to great superheroes of the Golden Age especially Alan Scott (Green Lantern) and Jay Garrick (Flash).

Before their stories begin, somebody else’s have to end. On a look back from five years ago, Earth-2′s trinity (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman) met their end in order to save their world from the raging war against the invasion of Apokolips. Our heroes won but it cost them their lives.

Other heroes survived, but their adventures will continue on another world. Earth-2′s Supergirl and Robin, will now see action as Earth Prime’s Power Girl and Huntress.

With the end of the war, Earth-2 tries to move on. But with its greatest superheroes gone, others have to fill in to ensure the it’s safety against evil. Alan Scott is then introduced, the soon to be Green Lantern. But it seems his story had to be delayed a little while as Jay Garrick, the soon to be Flash, will start to have his life changed forever.

As compared to the previous version of Earth-2 superheroes which began their adventures in the 1940s, this new set of heroes will have their youth just like the heroes of Earth Prime. We will get to see a younger version of Green Lantern and Flash and the rest of the Justice Society of America. The book offers a pretty good start with much anticipation on how everything will take place on this totally new setting. Much more excitement will it be as soon as heroes from these different worlds meet with each other.
